There are a lot of crazy things about learning a new language. One of the funniest is false cognates or “false friends” as they are often called in language classes. My favorite here is Puxar. It is pronounced p-oo-sh-ar. In the command form it is “puxe”. It sounds remarkably like the English word “push”. Unfortunately for me, it means “to pull”. Therefore, I see it on a door and invariably try to push the door open even if there is a handle. This is just one more way I embarrass myself on a daily basis!
