Book of the Month

This month I read Apprentice, My Life in the Kitchen by Jacques Pepin. TSP and I fell in love with watching Pepin’s PBS cooking shows when we lived in Boston. As I read it I was impressed by a few things but most importantly was Pepin’s idea of what it means to be American. As an immigrant, his perception is played out in the kind of food, business and life he was able to lead upon arrival in his new home. His ideal is overwhelmingly positive. The sense that America is a land of opportunity where you can do or be anything you want comes through clearly in his writing, and should come out more clearly in how many of us (especially me) live our lives. I would buy the book again.
