El Salvador

A while ago I told TSP that I had an opportunity to go to El Salvador for work. Thinking I said the wonderful Brazilian city of Salvador as opposed to the Central American republic, she said, “Great we’ll have a plane ticket and the hotel paid for, so we can all go.” She must have misheard, so I said, “Not Salvador, El Salvador”. The response was a simple, “Why would I want to go there?” A few weeks ago I went on the trip for a State Department conference and was pleasantly surprised by El Salvador.

The only problem with the whole trip was getting there and back. The trip there was interrupted by an unplanned stop for fuel in Lima, Peru and a less planned night in a hotel in Panama. On the way back, due to a cancelled flight, I got to fly overnight to Sao Paulo. At least they put me in the ultra comfortable last seat by the bathroom that does not recline…

El Salvador on the other hand was great. It is a beautiful country, lush and mountainous. The people seemed nice and the work that the embassy does there looked interesting. The conference was great. The officers who put it together organized a well rounded and thorough conference. The most interesting thing for me was calling TSP on the phone to tell her that it looks like we will need to rethink Central America in our future. I had a great time.

Glad to hear about your trip. I knew some Salvadorans when I was in Costa Rica. They were really nice people.
