In my class this semester, we have been discussing language and power. One of the topics has been about the influence of gender on language. A class member posed the question regarding the interaction of power and language in women. It was a really fascinating thread and made me think about that topic. I came to the conclusion that we often categorize a person with power as the person that speaks the loudest or is out in front. I don’t think that is the only type of power. There is also great power in quietly and calmly influencing the lives of others. Just because someone does not speak the loudest does not mean that they don’t have power. This was especially true when discussing language and how it changes. Studies have shown that, historically, women have had a significant impact on language change. This is a great example of power that is not always recognized. This power is not only related to language change. It could also be expanded to include societal change as well.
On a day that celebrates women, I commend all the women that use their power to influence this world for the better.
