As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we have the opportunity to hear from the general leaders of the Church every six months. This weekend was a special General Conference. On Saturday morning (in Utah, it was afternoon in Brazil) we were able to sustain Thomas S. Monson as the new president of the Church. Along with millions of people all over the world, we were able to show our support for new leaders. We actually went to our local chapel to watch the conference instead of listening to it on the internet. We decided to make this effort since AJP was very interested in seeing the sustaining of President Monson. AJP is still very enthralled (or maybe we should say obsessed) with how the church works, its history and its leaders. AJP loved seeing it and being a part of something so special. After all, it has only happened in modern times fifteen times. There was also another exciting event at the conference. To our surprise, our mission president was named as an Area Seventy and we were able to sustain him as one of our leaders. Sustaining him made the experience even more special.
AJP had one other exciting experience during the conference. We sat next to a man during the conference that looked very familiar. After a few moments, we realized that he was in a Church movie. We spoke with him and were excited to learn that indeed he was the person from the movie. The movie is about the history of the church around the world called “An Ensign to the Nations”. The movie interviews and highlights different people from various parts of the world as they speak about how the Church started in their country. This gentleman was a member of the first stake presidency in Brazil. He also helped with the building of the first temple in South America. It was like meeting a celebrity since we watched that movie almost every Sunday as we were preparing to move here. He was a very nice and gracious man.
