Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As many may have heard, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year I decided to celebrate the occasion. The party began when my GYN found a mass on my left breast and wanted me to see a “breast guy” (his term). So after procrastinating for a week (or was it two?), I made the appointment. The doctor was nice and got down to business. He, of course, found a mass on the right side as well. (I have never wanted anyone to feel left out but this is ridiculous!) What were his findings, you may ask. “Go and get a bilateral mammogram and we will go from there.” I made the appointment for the mammograms without procrastination. Three hours, a bilateral mammogram and bilateral sonogram later, I have a clean bill of health. “Only cysts – not life threatening” the tech tells me. Next week a follow up with the surgeon but it looks like no biopsies, surgeries or coffin will be in my near future!

The funny thing about this experience is how much it makes you think about your life. You start asking yourself some crazy questions. How will my children remember me if I were to die? Would JTP remarry? Have I lived the life I was supposed to live? Have I repented, made amends and “loved everyone”? I am glad I don’t have to answer those questions right now but it was a good and depressing exercise. This life is finite but that is something I don’t like to dwell on.

The final message from this experience: Ladies – go to your annual doctor’s appointments. It could have just as easily been cancer as a cyst.
