Grateful Sunday XIII

AJP taking notes on a floral representation of the work of Oscar Niemeyer.

Fast Sunday was actually two weeks ago in our ward. I have been so busy with my mom’s visit, work and helping out with AJP’s class that I have not really had time to focus on this post. Next Sunday will be Fast Sunday once more so I knew I had to get some thoughts down. I want to be consistent and do this post once a month. This month I am thankful for:

1. My mom. I don’t think she realizes it but she prepared me for my current lifestyle in a number of ways. I remember her bringing home unique fruit from the grocery store a few times so that we could try it. In the small secluded town in which I grew up, that was an impressive act. She wanted to expose her children to something different and found ways to accomplish that goal. She also had many friends that were not members of our church. This may seem insignificant but in a town where 90% of the people are the same religion this means that she had to be very open to new ideas and people. She set a framework for me to be the current citizen of the world (as my EFL student called me) and be open and accepting of new people, ideas and places.

2. My ancestors. It was over a hundred years ago that my ancestors left their humble homes in Europe for search of a better life in the United States. Most of them left on their adventure with only the sure conviction that it was the will of God. They left the comfort of their families, countries and language to start again in a wild and unknown country. I find comfort in their faith. I see their legacy working in my own life as I leave the comfort of my family, country and language because I believe it is the will of God.

3. The beautiful spring. Spring is my favorite season. It is so alive. The trees are flowering and the lilies are blooming. The colors and smells of the different flowers are amazing. We went to a flower show on Saturday at the British Consulate. The exhibits were enthralling, interesting and beautiful. It was a great way to celebrate spring.
