Grandma E’s Visit

Grandma E came to visit us last week. It was a really short trip. She was only in Brazil for seven days. She came by herself and did a great job navigating the airport in SP. So to all that doubted she could make it alone - you should not have worried!

The day after she arrived we went to the artisan village, Embu. AJP and BLP went crazy with their camera.

One of the shops.

Typical artisan items sold in Embu.

AJP's feet on the sidewalk. I guess he just couldn't resist.

The following Monday we left for Rio. We had learned at church on Sunday that the next day was the celebration of Nossa Senhora da Aparecida and that we would be travelling right by the town, Aparecida, which was the center of the celebrations. We worried about traffic but did not have a problem and even made it to Rio in record time. It is probably because we left at 6:00 a.m. (Brazilians are not known to be early risers!)

Rio was amazing as always. We went to Pão de Açucar (Sugar Loaf), Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) and to a great beach south of Rio. We stayed on Ipanema and enjoyed the walks along the beach and the fantastic ocean breezes.

Pão de Açucar from the tram.

AJP and BLP on Pão de Açucar over looking the Niterói bridge (the longest bridge in Brazil.)

The day after we returned to SP, Grandma E., BLP and I went the Museum of Modern Art. It was a lot smaller than I expected but it was still really nice. I love modern art since it has a way of making me look at ordinary objects in different ways. There were some great pieces there. The museum is housed in Ibirapuera Park so there are a number of sculptures placed around the park. It was a very nice visit.

The next day was spent packing since Grandma E flew out that night. We had a wonderful visit – Thank you for coming, Mom!
