A good phone voice
In Colombia, you answer the phone by saying “alo”. “Alo” sounds kind of like “hello” but without the “h” sound and a long "a". Once you’ve perfected this, people don’t know who they’re talking with. The best example of this would be last night. AJP picked up the phone and apparently his “alo” was so good that the person calling thought it was the maid. She tried to speak in Spanish until the person she was talking with started sounding more and more like a five year old. At that point she said, “AJP, can you get your dad”, but it was too late. AJP had run in to the bathroom where BLP was getting her bath to announce “I picked up the black phone.” (The black phone is the local phone, our VOIP phone to call the States is white.) I appears that the only Spanish word that anyone in our family, including AJP, has really perfected is "Alo"!
