Home Teaching
One of my favorite things about being Mormon is that there are two formalized programs that require members of the church to visit and look out for each other. Each man is paired with another man to make monthly visits to families in the congregation (home teaching) and each woman is paired with another woman to make monthly visits to the women in the congregation (visiting teaching). More than anything I have gotten to meet and know some wonderful people including: a professional trombonist, an airline pilot, a high school teacher and a former postmistress. My present home teaching situation is great as well. I am paired with an older man (at 76, I think that we can all agree that he’s older). Before retiring, he was a successful attorney in Bogotá. In the church he has been a temple president and a mission president in Bolivia. We visit an accountant and his family as well as a 55 year old man (I’m making no judgment on whether or not that’s old) who has lived 25 years outside of Colombia (France, Israel, Brazil, Japan) and speaks several languages (Spanish, English, Hebrew, French, Portuguese), and a maid. All of these people are wonderful and they all teach me a little more about how God loves and cares for us all as individuals.
