On Veterans’ Day, we visited the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. We parked in a free lot right by the tidal basin. From there we walked over to the Jefferson Memorial. We went to the Jefferson Memorial first because we got there early. It was impressive to see the large statute of the third president, but more impressive was reading his words engraved on the walls that became the basis for our government. We then walked over to the Washington Monument. We had reserved tickets to go to the top and were very excited to see the views of Washington and the surrounding area. After a short wait, we went inside to get the elevator. It was neat to see the views of Washington from that height. On the way down, the elevator goes rather slow so that visitors can see the decorated stones that states and cities donated to be part of the monument. The weather could not have been better. We had a wonderful time. Most of all, we all came away with a greater appreciation of the Founding Fathers.
