Happy International Women's Day - 2010!
Today the world celebrates the contributions of women to society. I just did a bit of reading on the subject and found out it started as a socialist holiday. That has now changed somewhat and has come to mean different things in different countries. This year the International Red Cross is using the holiday to focus on the plight of displaced women. The plight of displaced women is especially dire in areas of conflict where sexual violence, intimidation and discrimination are all too common. In such situations, women are often left to care for their children alone. Having lived in Colombia, a country with one of the largest populations of displaced persons, I can understand the vital importance of spotlighting this issue. Today, regardless of your political persuasion, is a great opportunity to think about how we can help women improve their lives and the lives of their children. It also presents a great opportunity for women everywhere to value their own womanhood and the great blessings being a woman entails.
